Plus Size Shelf Bra Tips

!±8± Plus Size Shelf Bra Tips

A plus size shelf bra intended for everyday wear is a rare thing indeed; this is because the term shelf bra is actually used to refer to two completely different garments in the fashion industry. Most commonly, shelf bras are erotic lingerie that leaves most of the breast exposed (if not the entire thing). However, many plus size women are not comfortable in such a revealing bra, particularly because large breasts typically require more support that these bras offer.

The other way these types of bras are used is to refer to the light bralettes sewn into tank tops and swim suits. Until recently, these lingerie undergarments were also often considered off-limits to plus size women; however, new support technologies have recently been introduced that are creating more supportive shelf bras than have previously been sold. Many tank tops and camisoles contain a thin second layer of elastic fabric known as a shelf; this band of elastic acts like a "shelf" on which the breasts are placed. These brassieres are typically found in garments that are too tight and skimpy to accommodate a traditional bra; for example, many tiny tank tops with micro-thin straps have shelf bras inside because any other, external bra would immediately be visible. In the hot summer months, these tight tank tops can be flattering and appropriate for slender figures. However, most plus size women require much greater breast support and lift than these fabric bands can provide, and so until recently were not able to partake in these popular fashions.

Thankfully, several large clothing companies are now producing molded-cup shelf bras! These plus size bras are also found in tank tops and certain bathing suits; however, they have molded cups with underwire support, and provide both greater modesty and greater lift than any previous incarnations of shelf bra. The thicker, molded cup material also ensures that the wearer's front silhouette remains smooth and nipple-free; these molded shelf bras also provide a level of cleavage and lift that has never before been possible.

The major drawback of a plus size shelf bra is obvious: women who wear the same shirt size do not all have breasts that are the same size. Unfortunately, this means that there are still some women who will not be able to find a shelf-bra tank top in which they feel comfortable or attractive. An excellent alternative is a tank top with slightly thicker straps and a neckline that a bit higher; these tops are still cool, comfortable, and fashionable, but allow the wearer to don a traditional, full-coverage bra without most of it showing to the public.

These tank tops are available at shopping malls and clothing stores everywhere, including websites such as LL Bean. Thrift stores and consignment shops are also fantastic places to look for tops such as these; they usually cost about a dollar, and are in excellent or very good condition. Some groups of girlfriends will also hold annual clothing swaps; this is a great way to relax with your friends and get rid of clothing that you no longer wear or want. These swaps also give you the opportunity to try new styles that you wouldn't necessarily want to put a whole lot of money behind. So go ahead and be adventurous! The only true fashion mistake is a style that you're too afraid to try.
